Digital Photo - Search for Meaning

The Search for Meaning assignment uses a list of twenty words selected by the students as the theme for their photographs.  The word for each image is below the photograph.  As always the photographer's name precedes their image.

Digital Photo / Abstract

These images are a selection from the Abstract Project.  These photographs represent some of the student's choices during our critique.  While there was discussion about what represents abstraction in photography, the class felt that these images were too strong to worry about whether they fit everyone's idea of abstraction.  The photographer's name proceeds their image.

As to why so many images use water as a theme, maybe it has to do with the fact that this project was due just after Superstorm Sandy.

Digital Photo / Landscape

The photographs below are from our Landscape Project.  These images are a selection of ones the class chose during a recent critique.  You will find a varied approach to the idea of landscape from the traditional to the more abstract.  We have sunsets viewed in a mirror reflected in a car and turned into black and white studies of the sunlight and clouds.  There are landscapes as close as a bench edge and as simple as a tree against the sky.  We hope you enjoy the view.  As always the names of the photographers proceeds their work.

Digital Photo / Portrait

The first post of the new semester of Digital Photography.  Right off, we started with portraiture as our assignment.  As you can see below, there where many different approaches to creating a portrait.  While you are only seeing a sampling, these are some of the images the class talked about most during our critique; along with some of my choices.   We hope you enjoy the photographs and come back to see the new ones we post in the future.  The photographer's name proceeds their work.

Reflections of the Bay / Dale Schreiber

This collection of images made up the final exhibit for Dale Schreiber's Senior Project.  While it will be hard to show the photographs on the blog in the wonderful way Dale arranged them for her final exhibit, I will make some attempt.  This was a three week project created by Dale using photography to focus on the Chesapeake Bay, an area of Virginia she is very fond of.  Enjoy.

Reflections of the Bay

Dale's Statement:

To me, the Bay is all about the little things; not the obvious ones, not the big scenic landscapes, all water and sky.  It's about the washed up baskets, mangled crab pots, tiny barnacles, little bugs and beached sea life.  For me, the Bay is all about reflections, the little things that make the Bay special.

I explore reflection in the Bay, through the patterns of water's reflection on boats, light invading the shadows, and the patterns seen through washed up objects.

There is beauty in the destructive power of the Bay. The mangled crab pot that washes ashore, still partially intact.  The mutilated, bleached crabs that sit waiting for predators to come feast on their insides.  All of these are what the beautiful Bay offers.  It is her circle of life. and it is wondrous.

Advanced Photography / William Russell

This group of photographs is from one of William Russell's photographic series done in Advanced Photography.  These images show how William has come full circle in his study of photography.  These photographs were taken with a film camera at long exposures using flashlights and other low level light sources.  The images are printed dark and show only the highlights on objects.  This work harks back to the early days of photography and makes one aware of the very essence of the photographic art.
